Possible causes of suffering…

1. We don’t know everything.
2. A higher purpose – a wake-up call from God, to get our attention. God’s megaphone to a deaf world, being allowed by God to bring us to our own end and to repent for our higher eternal good.
3. We are all in this together – overall, our own human fault, as we have free will. If all life was only from evolution, our suffering would be far more, so it is better than would be expected.
4. There is suffering greater than any on this earth – Hell forever.
5. Jesus suffered the most, by taking our penalty for our rebellion against God, even though he was perfect. Jesus suffered to bring some of us to God, and so we could avoid further suffering…
6. Discipline for our straying sometimes – God treating those who love him as his children.
7. An early judgement – Sodom and Gomorrah as an example.
8. Satan was described as the ‘prince of this world’ and the ‘father of lies’ by Jesus. He messes things up supremely, and must be laughing how many people don’t even believe that he exists!
9. God made everything perfectly at creation – no death or suffering initially.

10. God will bring complete justice in the end.

Who goes to Heaven?

Most people looked like they had lots of thoughts as to why they didn’t like Christianity. However, they were reluctant to write them down!

Some said they didn’t like the authority and control. Others that they didn’t like any religion.

Nobody addressed the issue of “what is true?”

It was my question, and I am open to other’s thoughts and criticisms. However, I don’t get it as to why they would reject the evidence of Jesus’ life, miracles, substitutionary death for us and then the evidence of his coming back to life again.

Normally, we all love getting something for free. Forgiveness from God offered for free pretty much summarises the good news of Jesus. But most people don’t see that as valuable.

I love the Bible, Jesus and the forgiveness of God! I am sorry that most others in the market don’t want that.

Who goes to Heaven?

Themselves, their cat, bacteria and fungi were given as some of the answers.

Others gave the expected big names of tech, finance, and power.

However, the question comes from a direct quote of Jesus, included 3 times in the Bible on different occasions.

He said that Satan is ‘the ruler of this world’.

Jesus describes Satan as ‘the deceiver’, and the ‘father of lies’.

Most people don’t accept or honour the God of the Bible, but live ignoring or rejecting him. Jesus is implying that such people are being controlled unwittingly by Satan. They may think they are ‘cool’ and in control of their very independent lives, living the way they want to, but they are actually following Satan’s script as the deceiver.

Jesus came to put down Satan, sin, and death. He did this on the cross of Jerusalem. The results are partially for now, but especially for when Jesus returns to judge each person and to send Satan to Hell forever. Justice will be complete.

What do you think of that?

Would Jesus be ‘woke’? https://lifehope.blog/would-jesus-be-woke/ https://lifehope.blog/would-jesus-be-woke/#respond Sun, 24 Apr 2022 11:43:05 +0000 https://lifehope.blog/?p=1211 The post Would Jesus be ‘woke’? appeared first on Life Hope.

Depends on what YOU mean by woke…

It really did on the day!

Those who thought that being woke was simply to be someone who rose up against racism and abuses of power in society usually voted “Yes!”. Jesus was certainly against racism, saying that he had come for all people, just as he sent his followers to spread the good news of his life, death and resurrection to all people, to the ends of the earth.

He also opposed the ruling religious class for their spiritual hypocrisy and the way they were unaccepting of other racial groups.

Those who voted “No!” had some idea that Jesus believed, for example, in the creation of the world by God, marriage being between a man and a woman, and immorality being wrong. They felt that the current meaning of “woke” as being progressive would not tolerate such an attitude.

What do you think?

“Idols” in the survey was taken to only mean “celebrity idols”

That was a surprise to me! What about “idols” that we make in our lives as being of the greatest importance to us personally, and as a society? Things like money and wealth. Like sex and leisure. Like sport and entertainment. The list would be enormous!

From the answers that were given by those in the market, we see that entertainers were the tops, followed by those who had overcome or done something very special.

A celebrity idol who can change me forever?

Seeing the answers of others, I thought, “These celebrities are themselves going to fail, and to fall out of that celebrity status. Who will last and give me meaning and positive change all the way through to the end?”

Only Jesus…

He wasn’t flawed then, when performing miracle after supernatural miracle. Nor when he purposely gave his life on the torturing cross, taking our shame and punishment in our place for our rejecting God and his laws. Especially when he came back to life as he had promised, he certainly wasn’t in any way flawed.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
John 3:16 (NIV) (http://www.laridian.com)

I voted for Jesus as my enduring idol, giving me meaning now and ongoing.

What’s good about Christmas? https://lifehope.blog/whats-good-about-christmas/ https://lifehope.blog/whats-good-about-christmas/#respond Tue, 21 Dec 2021 02:46:09 +0000 https://lifehope.blog/?p=1131 The post What’s good about Christmas? appeared first on Life Hope.

Right up front I will say that for me Christmas starts and finishes with Jesus. He was the reason 2,000 years ago for it to start in the first place, wasn’t he? That’s why it is called Christ-mas. The last 3 letters meaning to celebrate.

How long will it last?

However, with so little about Jesus Christ in Christmas these days, and instead “holiday season”, “festive season”, and many others, how long will the title last?

Can our society still play for years on end with the Santa story? When will reality kick in? Holidays are great, but what about something more existential and longer-term meaningful for a hurting world?

Jesus came for us hurting people in this hurting world

No other faith has God coming down and living here and identifying with us. No other has God taking our shame and punishment for our rebellion against him, so that we can be led back to him.

That’s why Jesus came (Christmas), died (Good Friday), and rose from the dead (Easter Sunday). As the Son of God, if we are willing, since he never forces, he can take us back to God, allow our wrongs to be forgiven, and have us live with him forever on the new earth of heaven.

How good is that?

“It just feels nice”

That’s what someone wrote for this topic in the market. Another person put up, “The joy of giving people something they need.”

Consumerism

That summarized a comment – “A holiday started by corporations to make money.”

So, what is the reason for presents at Christmas?

The wise men from the east

There were some scholars who came from a country somewhere east of Palestine, according to the detailed narrative in the Bible. They purposely sought out the whereabouts of the baby Jesus, and were eventually led to the actual place in the town of Bethlehem where Jesus and his mother Mary were.

They then bowed down to Jesus, and presented him with very expensive gifts carrying great significance for his future life, ministry, and death.

The gifts were gold (for kings), frankincense (for priests), and myrrh (for the dead).

Good old Saint Nick!

Historically, another explanation is that of the man Nicholas, who lived in south-western Turkey in the 4th century. He had changed his faith from the predominant Greco-Roman paganism and had become a Christian before it had become legal. He then tried to secretly give poor people in his town gifts to help them in their lack. Sometimes he would hide the gifts in clothing, like long socks hung up in front of the fire to dry. People eventually found out that he was the secret gift-giver. Some time later, he was renamed Saint Nicholas, from which many centuries later the name and story eventually morphed into Santa Claus.

The original story is inspiring, and Jesus did say that it is better to give than to get!

In fact, nowadays, many followers of Jesus are leaving behind the consumerism and getting back to the basics, just wanting to thank God for sending Jesus. Why would we do that?

It obviously shows belief, but as well the evidence of his life 2,000 years ago, the depth and detail of descriptions about him in the Bible, and the way we claim he has dramatically changed our lives for the good, now and forever.

Why not open a Bible online and check out the first couple of chapters of the Gospel of Luke concerning the circumstances of his birth?

When are you supposed to make a bucket list?

I guess you can never be too young!

To know God better is on my bucket list. That’s the God of the Bible. It is right at the top, followed by less special activities like travel or other priorities.

With that goes not only knowing him better, but also obeying better.

Jesus said:

“If you love me, keep my commands.

John 14:15 (NIV) (http://www.laridian.com)

What about yourself?

Do you think Christianity is deficient?

What I call ‘Cultural Christianity’ is definitely deficient, in my opinion.

That is what a lot of people think Christianity is, but it is only a name-only version, and a poor one at that. You could call it ‘Churchianity’ with popes, priests and platitudes. Going to church now and again, a thin veneer of religiosity, having a great time at Christmas and Easter, and a bunch of religious formulas, rules and traditions.

The Bible itself is usually secondary in this whole generalisation. Most of the population of our western societies have followed that over the centuries, and this has led to much of the confusion, hypocrisy and rejection of it over the last decades.

A living relationship, not a religion

The real thing is actually a radical and personal relationship with the living God of the Bible, which has been made possible through Jesus Christ. That is why it is called Christ-ianity. It leads to a changed life, a changed attitude and a changed future.

It is dependent on ordinary people like us realising who the God of the Bible really is, that he is completely holy and pure, and that we aren’t. It goes on from there to understand and thankfully accept what Jesus, the Son of God, at great personal cost, did for us in coming to earth and giving himself on the cross in Jerusalem as a substitute for us. And this out of pure and self-denying love, something totally foreign to any other belief system in the world.

To authenticate the truth of the spiritual transaction, God then brought Jesus back to life again, just as it had been predicted.

Our wrongs

Those of us who accept that we have wronged God, by ignoring him, and also wronged other people, have the opportunity of being completely forgiven our wrongs by God. However, since it is not just a mental acceptance, but a revolutionary change from the inside, we do need to change our lifestyle, learn to love others and to live to please God.

This free gift then gives us great joy and thankfulness, so much so that we want to live for him, rather than just for our own self-centred selves.

A new life

This new life should lead to faith, hope and love, with acts of kindness, sacrifice and serving of others. History has shown that such people over the centuries have willingly served the poor, the sick, the uneducated and the down-trodden.

However, there are still deficencies, as we are still very much human!

What do you think are the main deficencies?
