“Yes” was the answer!

That is, we will be kind and compassionate to each other. Great! We are all made in the image of God, so all of us have the capacity to be kind and compassionate. No one group has the sole copyright or monopoly on this ability.

However, the back narrative is seen in the picture from the market with the Bible verse:  “… just as in Christ, God forgave you.”

That really is the ultimate in kindness and compassion – Jesus coming to love us and give himself for us, so that we can be restored and reconciled to God.

This is through God forgiving those who have accepted Jesus as their substitute. Forgiven for their ignoring and previous rejection of God. And then changing, because they want to please their wonderfully kind and gracious God!

Great news!

Depends on how you define “love”

That word has about as broad a use in society as the word “Christian”!

The scope goes from the cheap “made with love” label of a mechanically manufactured biscuit, to the sublime relationship between some couples of self-giving kindness and faithfulness. In between are the rest of us with our use, or misuse, of the word…

In the past, “to make love” related to having sex, with or without the pure love component.

When “love” is really sexual immorality, combined with only impure “lust”, then could we call it false “love”?

If a short, or even longer term relationship is spoken about in the terms of love, when it really is only lust, then that would seem to be using someone for one’s own fun. The other person doesn’t matter. It’s all about me. We normally call that selfish and manipulating behaviour.

God made love

It’s interesting the way the Bible uses the word love. In English, we have one word, but in the original Greek of the New Testament, there are 4 different words!

Storge = family-type love

Eros = sensual or romantic love

Phileo = close friend love

Agape = self-giving sacrificial love

Can love be pure? Sure can! Mostly this last one, wouldn’t you agree?

It turns out, that word is the one that’s used to describe the love of Jesus for us. In giving himself up for us on the cross, he set us up to escape the wrath of God against our rebellion. But only if we want it. He’s a true gentleman, and doesn’t force anyone to accept it, if they don’t want to…

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. [5] It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. [6] Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. [7] It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”
1 Corinthians 13:4 (NIV) (http://www.laridian.com)

Negative consequences follow from our negative actions?

They usually do, but not always. For instance, sickness doesn’t necessarily follow, unless we have been adopting an unhealthy lifestyle.

It is to do with the law of cause and effect. You could even say cosmic justice.

Most of us would like there to be such a principle in the universe, so that the Hitlers and the Stalins et al could be held responsible for their crimes.

However, we would rather we ourselves were not hauled up to such a court!

In this life, or the life to come, or both?

This is another level, which really makes us think!

From the Bible’s perspective, it is both. God gives us freedom of choice, since he loves us enough to not just make us robots. We can choose now how to live our lives, and what to do about him, but we won’t be able to choose the eternal consequences.

“… you may be sure that your sin will find you out.”
Numbers 32:23 (NIV) (http://www.laridian.com)

“Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.”

Galatians 6:7 (NIV) (http://www.laridian.com)

Karma

Some would say that “Karma” is the same. However, it is part of Buddhism, which believes there is no God. Who or what or how would our actions, thoughts, and motives be observed, recorded, stored, and then brought to justice after death, without God? “What goes around, comes around” lacks the intelligent being…

Should everyone find their own truth?

Or are there some givens in all societies that are constant, and even part of our conscience?

Should everyone just do what is right in their own eyes, like moral relativism?

Ethical standards in each of us are real, even if we don’t always live up to them…

What about murder, rape, stealing, telling lies, bribery, immorality, abortion, euthanasia? Are they right or wrong?

We should be careful in making our judgements here. Do they reflect our family background, our community, our government or something higher?

A universal law maker?

If we accept there is universal right and wrong, good and evil, we then have to acknowledge there must be a moral law maker, such as God.

However, if we consider ourselves to be just an insignificant part of a vast, random and purposeless universe, why should we feel strongly about what is right and wrong? To be consistent, Secular Atheism should hold this view.

Personally, I believe there is a universal right and wrong. I base that on the Bible, the book passed down accurately through the centuries. That topic deserves a full Post for those who may be sceptical of my statement!

The Ten Commandments are a good start to universal right and wrong. I read each as “You will be happy if  you …”

The “Golden Rule” of Jesus works well too.

So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.

Matthew 7:12 (NIV) (http://www.laridian.com)

Where do you get your right and wrong from?

Does pursuing abortion and euthanasia enhance our credibility as a civilised society? https://lifehope.blog/abortion-and-euthanasia-a-civilised-society/ https://lifehope.blog/abortion-and-euthanasia-a-civilised-society/#respond Fri, 17 Sep 2021 03:45:00 +0000 https://lifehope.blog/?p=901 The post Does pursuing abortion and euthanasia enhance our credibility as a civilised society? appeared first on Life Hope.

‘Pro-Choice or Pro-Life?

Does being pro-life mean that society is more civilised, or does being pro-choice mean that?

You can see from the blackboard result opposite that the majority of respondents in the market thought the latter.

I do find that difficult to accept

It is hard and inappropiate to call abortion anything other than the process of killing a baby in utero. It cannot be honestly sanitised to an alternative definition. Baby is the special word we have come to call the living human in the pregnant mother. We never hear a pregnant mum say her ‘foetus’ is kicking, or ‘just some tissue’ is starting to move, or has a heartbeat.

Once we know about the process of abortion, and especially if we see it on a live video, there is also no way we can think of the baby as anything other than living, and abortion as anything other than the killing of it. The reality is that the process is truly horrible to watch.

A mother’s love is normally accepted as the most exemplary of all forms of human love, isn’t it? Maybe there should be more forms of support for an expectant mother, so that she is more able to support and carry her baby to its birth?

I like that saying I heard somewhere – “Love them both.” They both have rights.

Photo by Pablo Heimplatz on Unsplash

A civilized society?

What is that?

The Cambridge Dictionary  is the first that came up with a one sentence definition on a search: – “A civilized society or country has a well-developed system of government, culture, and way of life and that treats the people who live there fairly.”

“Fairly”?

Abortion can’t be fair to the baby. The baby hasn’t done any crime. It is innocent of any wrong. As well, its DNA genetic make-up is completely unique and different to its mother’s and father’s. Amazingly, its circulating blood and other organ systems are totally separate, even though they are dependent and enclosed within the body of  its dear mother. That place should be the safest of all places, and both should be protected and safe.

Assisted Suicide and Euthanasia?

When laws are enacted to allow such to happen, all looks safe and tidy. However, the risks for misuse can easily be imagined, if we are realistic.

To be fair, this needs to be discussed in another Post!

With at least 1 out of 4* occupants destined to die, isn’t the womb the most dangerous place to live? The WHO statistic is disquieting, isn’t it?

Nowadays it’s difficult to know what percentage of pregancies end in spontaneous abortions (miscarriages), and what percentage from induced abortions (terminations of pregnancy).

It seems that the spontaneous ones are mostly due to chromosomal problems, while the induced result from human choice. Whatever the reason, both are tragic. Very understandably, the events sum up to a huge rollercoaster of emotions for those intimately involved.

The womb should be the safest place to live. After all, when a lady is pregnant, the baby is the most delicate and vulnerable of us all.

Ultrasounds are amazingly detailed these days, and also show that detail earlier and earlier in the pregnancy.

Seeing the skull, the spinal cord, the limbs, as well as the beating heart, touches us in a most amazing way. We are usually full of wonder at these sights.

Whenever my wife has been pregnant, my reflex desire has been to love and care for them both.

The sanctity of each human life

This is a precious principle. I think it should apply from conception to death, the bookends of our lives. Some of this is reflected in Psalm 139 written and preserved from 4,000 years ago. For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
[14] I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
[15] My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
[16] Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be.
Psalms 139:13 (NIV) (http://www.laridian.com) What are your thoughts?

We all make choices about this

It probably comes down to “who do I want to please?”

Mostly, it will be ourselves. To some extent, that is reasonable, isn’t it?

However, who else?

It could be our best friend, our partner, our god, or God. It could even be the government, but that may not be at that level…

Personally, I like to try to do what Jesus said:

He answered, “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”

Luke 10:27 (NIV) (http://www.laridian.com)

Not very popular, but that is me nowadays.

Can Secular Atheism really give you meaning, morality and hope? https://lifehope.blog/can-secular-atheism/ https://lifehope.blog/can-secular-atheism/#respond Tue, 24 Aug 2021 06:20:00 +0000 https://lifehope.blog/?p=406 Secular Atheism can provide meaning to life, morality to successfully live by, and hope that survives Covid, disasters, pain and sorrow? Some think so, but I don't.

The post Can Secular Atheism really give you meaning, morality and hope? appeared first on Life Hope.

]]>

Recently, a friend claimed that Secular Atheism gives him meaning,  morality, and hope.

I found that incredible. I couldn’t see how that was possible. Unless, that is, we define meaning, morality and hope differently.

So, although a discussion could be prickly, we got talking about this in a serious way …

Secular Atheism

He believes there is no God, and desires to live in a society where there is no mention or dependence on anything spiritual. OK. That is his thought and that is his wish. I am the opposite of this in worldview and belief, but we can still relate!

Meaning

He thinks that he can make the most of his life by living with the worldview of evolution/big bang, incredible good luck, accidental existence, Existentialism and making the most of what ‘just so’ happens.

Morality

His argument was that since there is no creator, then no moral law maker or moral laws, and so you can do what you want, as long as you “don’t hurt anyone else”. But how many do get hurt?

Hope

Concerning this, well, he hopes he is right, and that at the end of the day, if not the end of his life, he will have been a help to others, as well as to himself. After that, nothing… As if the plug is pulled out of the electrical wall socket, and that’s it forever!

What will reality prove to be?

I don’t mean to sound critical, but I also have thoughts, and all of that just doesn’t fit with what I think reality, history, and the Bible show as a life of fulfilling meaning, morality and hope.

Meaning

– for me has become the desire and pleasure of seeking to please my wonderful Jesus in how I live and think. That for me has become so satisfying and fulfilling.

Morality

– comes from God’s directions in the Bible, so that it reads like: If you want to be happy, don’t act immorally. Remember, without holiness, no one will see God, a Bible principle. In case anyone is wondering, I don’t claim at all to have that level of holiness from just myself. No. Just the same as the rest of us. However, Jesus, as the Son of God, specifically came down from heaven to die for people like me on the cross, thereby taking my shame and judgement in my place, as my substitute. He came back to life again as he predicted, and that way gives me the holiness and forgiveness that I could get no other way.

Hope

– is such a positive word, but for hope to be real hope, living hope, it has to be based on solid foundations with evidence. I have found that hope to be in many of the words of Jesus. For example,

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

John 14:6 (NIV) (http://www.laridian.com)

This can become a problem for some people as it definitely seems exclusive, which is anathema to many these days. Yes, it is exclusive, but that just shows that it is a truth claim, rather than just a nice thought claim, a nice wish, nice for me, but no one else.

What do you think?

We make choices

We all make choices from day to day and year to year as to how we will live our individual lives.

Also, we all have personal standards that we have set for how we live our lives, be they from our parents, family, school, Facebook, Instagram, or some ‘social construct’.

Do I actually live up to my own standards?

We may say we do that about 80% of the time or whatever.

When it comes to God’s standards, we may get more tense about the realistic percentage…

Photo by Pablo Heimplatz on Unsplash

Does God actually care about how we live? If he does, then what are the consequences of not doing well according to his standards, the more likely outcome?

Seeking to please whom?

Jesus said that God had made him the judge of every person. Therefore, it makes sense to seek to please him in our lives. That means to discover what pleases him, and that is from the Bible, historically, the most published book ever in the world.

You will notice from the results of the poll opposite that most people in the Market on that day didn’t think God cared how they lived. That could have been because they don’t think God even exists. However, if God does exist, we would have to agree that many will be alarmed to be judged for how they lived their lives.

The Bible has many things to say about this, but here is just one:

“Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, [28] so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.”
Hebrews 9:27 (NIV)  (http://www.laridian.com)

I know that Jesus will be completely fair, and really, there is the cross and what he achieved on that as my substitute. He did that so ordinary people like me could be forgiven our wrongs, and brought to God.

What about yourself?

The Sexolution

The sexual revolution has been going for many years now. Over the years, that has included free sex, multiple sexual partners, freedom to do whatever, but also increased chance of STIs, less marriage, less commitment to long-term faithfulness.

What are the results overall? Victory or defeat? That’s how you usually measure a revolution’s effect.

Are people more sexually fulfilled?

What do you think? How do you measure those results? Happy lives or the opposite? Contented, fulfilled, satisfied lives, happy to live faithfully with their partner/spouse?  Less cheating and more faithfulness? What do we call the opposite of that – frustrated, unfulfilled, dissatisfied…?

Results

In my opinion, those last words could be applied to many today as far as their perceptions of the end results of their sex lives are concerned. Many would say they are shattered – their dreams, their being disillusioned with the opposite sex, as well as their loss of self-respect and inner peace. This could be combined with having no long-term companionship, living alone, no lasting happy marriage to their best friend, as well as no children to celebrate life and achievements with.

Photo by Pablo Heimplatz on Unsplash

Such a shame! Does that have to be the result, or could it have been different?

Joseph, an example

The Bible says to “flee sexual immorality”.  Joseph is the classic example of that. This is a different Joseph to Mary’s husband. He had been sold as a slave by his jealous brothers and taken to Egypt. While there, he was warmly and persistently invited to go to bed with his owner’s wife, but in the end, when literally cornered, he fled, and got out of there, rather than make the most of a good opportunity – (Genesis 39).

In our society, it is so easy to take part in sexual immorality. You can see from the poll on the blackboard above, what the majority thought at the Market. From my stall there I can see a big sign opposite, outside a club – “Let’s meet in bed!” Will those who act on that end up long-term having a happy life, or the opposite?

“Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.”

Hebrews 12:14 (http://www.laridian.com)
