Self-absorption or self-sacrifice?

Another way of putting it – serving self only, versus serving others?

If we are self-absorbed, do we recognize it?

Self-absorption is only concerned with self, and the importance of self.

If we are self-sacrificing, do we recognize it?

Self-sacrificing probably is other person-centred, and doesn’t ‘blow its own trumpet’.

Most people chose ‘Both’. That seems realistic. A bit like in a plane. The cabin crew advise us to first put the oxygen mask on ourselves, then on our accompanying child.

Jesus was amazingly different. His actions  showed no self-absorption, but rather self-sacrificing. Ultimately, at great personal cost, he willingly gave his life for us. Three days later, showing the truth of his predictions, he came back to life again.

“… I have not come to be served, but to serve, and to give my life as a ransom for many.”

Matthew 6:33 (NIV)(http://www.laridian.com)

Is Buddhism about putting down all your desires? https://lifehope.blog/is-buddhism-about-putting-down-all-your-desires/ https://lifehope.blog/is-buddhism-about-putting-down-all-your-desires/#respond Tue, 05 Apr 2022 03:22:40 +0000 https://lifehope.blog/?p=1195 The post Is Buddhism about putting down all your desires? appeared first on Life Hope.

Buddha’s main thesis?

“We can eliminate suffering when we cease to desire.”

From my reading over the years, that seems to encapsulate it.

Certainly there are other major themes for all Buddhists, be they eastern or western/eclectic Buddhists.

However, does that theme seem to be a self-defeating argument – the desire to put down all one’s desires?

The eclectic western Buddhists in the market last Saturday disagreed with the original statement.

I think that many of our desires are good God-given desires. If we run with those desires in the right context, then we can be quite happy.

If my desires conflict with that, then it would be better to put them down…

That is especially if we want to please God, and do the right thing by our neighbor.

Your thoughts?

Your tattoos – their meaning for you? https://lifehope.blog/your-tattoos-their-meaning-for-you/ https://lifehope.blog/your-tattoos-their-meaning-for-you/#respond Tue, 16 Nov 2021 10:55:10 +0000 https://lifehope.blog/?p=1051 The post Your tattoos – their meaning for you? appeared first on Life Hope.

There are some things we really want – like tattoos!

Then we research them, chase and nail them. It’s all a bit of fun. However, to get a tattoo takes time, a certain amount of pain, and money. It is also fairly permanent!

Those who choose tattoos, have their own good reasons for getting them.

That’s what I thought, anyway!

The day in the market with that question was enlightening.

Some loved their tattoos; others just hated theirs…

One thing in common was that they all had a story to tell about them.

It’s a bit like the way we all have a story to tell about each of our individual lives…

Some parts are happy, some are sad, and others are just confusing or embarrassing.

“I hate them all!”

That was the impassioned response of an Irish young woman. She had got them when under the influence at 15 years of age.

Others talked about some of the ones they had already partly removed  – at greater expense than the original cost and with much greater pain! Ouch!

The theme of ‘regrets’ came up many times

That is also something that all of us can identify with in our lives, whether tattoos or not.

How many of our personal actions in our lives do we actually deeply regret?

Shame and embarrassment surround those actions in our memories.

What we have thought, what we have said, what we have done…

The list for each of us seems endless.

That’s what is so good about the good news about Jesus. We can have that shame and guilt taken away by what he purposely achieved for us on the cross. He can bring us to God, washed clean. It’s like he forgives my past, changes me on the inside, and makes me into a new person.

The reason for those regrets gets taken away. Amazing!

Why do so many people take their life these days? https://lifehope.blog/why-do-so-many-people-take-their-own-life-these-days/ https://lifehope.blog/why-do-so-many-people-take-their-own-life-these-days/#respond Tue, 31 Aug 2021 05:03:08 +0000 https://lifehope.blog/?p=393 Why do so many people take their own lives these days? Do they think there is nothing after dying, or very depressed, or nothing to live for?

It’s extremely sad…

Mental illness, whether called Depression, Bipolar, Schizophrenia, or whatever, or just plain deep sadness through recent unhappy circumstances, anything that leads to a lack of hope in life, and then suicide is so sad.

The loss of a precious life. Not by an accident, or quirk of nature, but by the choice of the one who is no longer with us.

Those left, of course, have their own pain, regrets and sadness to deal with.

How precious is a human life?

Precious enough to seek to save it.

Jesus said about himself,

“For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

Luke 19:10 (NIV)  (http://www.laridian.com)

For me, it’s one thing to be lost in this short life, but it’s another thing to be lost in eternity, with all the length and depth of that.

That’s why Jesus’ offer has proven so good for me. He said,

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. [29] Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. [30] For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV) (http://www.laridian.com)

Every lifestyle, no matter how seemingly freeing or individualistic, has a yoke, some sort of inherent burden or set of boundaries that goes with it. Jesus said his is “light”, compared with the rest.

Do you think it would be?

The Sexolution

The sexual revolution has been going for many years now. Over the years, that has included free sex, multiple sexual partners, freedom to do whatever, but also increased chance of STIs, less marriage, less commitment to long-term faithfulness.

What are the results overall? Victory or defeat? That’s how you usually measure a revolution’s effect.

Are people more sexually fulfilled?

What do you think? How do you measure those results? Happy lives or the opposite? Contented, fulfilled, satisfied lives, happy to live faithfully with their partner/spouse?  Less cheating and more faithfulness? What do we call the opposite of that – frustrated, unfulfilled, dissatisfied…?

Results

In my opinion, those last words could be applied to many today as far as their perceptions of the end results of their sex lives are concerned. Many would say they are shattered – their dreams, their being disillusioned with the opposite sex, as well as their loss of self-respect and inner peace. This could be combined with having no long-term companionship, living alone, no lasting happy marriage to their best friend, as well as no children to celebrate life and achievements with.

Such a shame! Does that have to be the result, or could it have been different?

Joseph, an example

The Bible says to “flee sexual immorality”.  Joseph is the classic example of that. This is a different Joseph to Mary’s husband. He had been sold as a slave by his jealous brothers and taken to Egypt. While there, he was warmly and persistently invited to go to bed with his owner’s wife, but in the end, when literally cornered, he fled, and got out of there, rather than make the most of a good opportunity – (Genesis 39).

In our society, it is so easy to take part in sexual immorality. You can see from the poll on the blackboard above, what the majority thought at the Market. From my stall there I can see a big sign opposite, outside a club – “Let’s meet in bed!” Will those who act on that end up long-term having a happy life, or the opposite?

“Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.”

Hebrews 12:14 (http://www.laridian.com)

What do you think?
